Just talked to Nancy. She is covered in road rash down her left side- from knee, thigh, hip, forearm, and shoulder. Apparently, a cyclist in front of her (Tom Watt from Columbia) lost control of his bike on the last hill on Hwy 67 and fell in front of her. Nancy's bike hit the back of his head knocking him out cold. Nancy went skidding down along the rumble strips and fell into the HWY. Fortunately no cars were coming. Both Nancy and Tom were rushed to the hospital. Both are OK now but very sore and scraped up. No broken bones. Nancy said she will be posting a more detailed report later. Also, the runner who fell near the finishline on the first run was suffering from heat exhaustion and is doing better.

Thanks Bob & Leonard! I was not far behind them; but, I had my head down and didn't see how it went down. Glad to hear they are okay. It is amazing Tom is okay, because he did not look good.

Fortunately, there were 2 medics racing that came right in behind us and Nancy acted very quickly by having someone call 911 and getting someone to ride in for help.

Also, good to hear about the other runner. Yep, today was a tough day for racing in the heat.

Just a quick update...I just spoke with Dr. Tom Watt, the other person involved in the crash and he said he was doing well and returned to work today. He wanted me to express his gratitude to everyone who assisted us from the medics, firemen, ambulance and hospital personnel. He also wanted to say a special thank you to whoever was responsible for getting his truck and bike to the hospital for him. He said this was above and beyond the call of duty. Everyone was so nice. This was Tom's first time to participate in a GCRC event. I'm sure he will remember us fondly. :| He did say he would definitely be back to do another of our events, but he was thinking maybe a 5k. I asked if he kayaked and he said he did. I suggested he come back for the Yak-A-Du in Sept. I also pointed out that the paddle portion was held in a river that was mostly shallow. I would just like to add my personal thanks one more time. After hearing Tom's comments it made me so proud to be a part of this group. Once again it was shown how we support each other in a time of crisis. Y'all are the best!
