Test Driving a Weekly Run

Postby Beekeeper » Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:31 pm

Well, we test drove a new weekly run this week and our comments received lots of LIKES on Facebook. Here are the logistics:
1. Weekly 5K easy run. Essentially, can you hold a conversation with the person next to you.
2. Thursday evenings, starting 6:00 - 6:15ish.
3. Currently starting and finishing at the Long Beach Harbor, heading west, out and back.
4. Socialize afterwards at Juan Tequila's on HWY 90, Long Beach.
5. We were done running, drinking, and eating by 7:30. The only thing that might have kept us there longer was if we started to karaoke.

The idea is to develop a social running group that welcomes all and partners with a local food/beverage establishment. It may be one business or more depending on how the group chooses to develop/organize it. It's not fancy, it's not formal, it's not fast...it's casual and hopefully enjoyable. Think of McGuire's in Pensacola and their weekly running group.

Come out next Thursday, 27 January, and test drive it for yourself. We park in the Juan Tequila's parking lot and start across the street at the Long Beach Harbor. The run and Juan Tequila's are family friendly. So is their karaoke on Thursdays.

Shoot me a message or call me with any questions, 228 547 0927.

I'm thinking it would be more fun if we did the drinking and singing then went for the run. 8)

Well, last weeks weather on Thursday kept us off the streets of Long Beach. Looking ahead to this week it appears we'll be back on track for an easy shake-up run followed by some socializing at Juan Tequila's. Don't be afraid of a late night. We are all early to bed, early to rise people. We may discuss trying another venue in March...it's all a work in progress.

Sure would like to get something like that going over here in Ocean Springs! Sounds like a great way to meet more runners AND get the family involved. If anyone's interested, let me know. The rest of February is squirrely for me but would love to start in March.

I'd be game for that in OS. FWIW, I do the Mellow Mushroom run in Mobile most Tuesday nights (I work over that way much of the week). It started with a handful of people and has turned into a family friendly, no one dropped run of about 50 to nearly 100 runners (and a few walkers) a week, and occasionally over 100. People finish that anywhere from 18 min to 40 min.

The formula they use is meet at 5:45, step off at 6PM sharp. Discounted beer and slices of pizza after wards for runners.

Maybe from the OS Mushroom or Tom's Extreme Pizza- looping down Dewey, the harbor, Jackson Ave and back? Or something that would add up to 3.1 miles. Sunday night? Thursday night? Whatcha thinking?

I'm thinking a run in OS would be great too. We do Thursdays in Long Beach because a lot of people jump start their weekends on Thursdays. Our numbers have been low but dedicated. The horizon was red tonight to the west which was nice. It won't be long before we'll be running in to the sunset. When things warm up a little we're going to try a couple of different establishments and then make a collective decision on where we'll congregate after future runs. Hoping to make it one establishment so that they can "sponsor" us, offer specials, maybe support a fun run.

Keep us posted, via the forum, on the happenings in Ocean Springs and we'll plan to get over there to join you.

I'm so glad that some of you might be interested in this! I was thinking of meeting at Leo's Pizza on Gov't to start. They have a great patio area that will be nice this spring. I'd like to meet at 6 and step off at 6:15. I haven't looked at a route yet but plan to keep it at 5k in the downtown/beach area. It should be family friendly and so not too fast and not out too late, as they do in Long Beach. I'm planning or rather hoping to have my 14 yr old daughter also run. I think this is a great oppty to get our young people involved too.

As I had said February is tough for me to start this. I'm in the middle of moving AND training for my first half marathon on March 6. Ideally, I would like to start this March 10, possibly could do March 3. I say we try Thursday nights and see how it goes. Would waiting until March be okay?

I was wondering if the Long Beach run was doable with a double (side-by-side) jogging stroller?
Thanks!

Ooh, a double side by side jogging stroller. I'll have to defer that to Peggy. Some parts of the boardwalk can accomodate the stroller but other parts may not. We'll take a look during this weeks run.

Throw caution to the wind and throw an easy 5K into your plans this Thursday. It's supposed to be a comfortable 70F and sunset is at 5:47pm. Since we run west at 6:00pm we'll still be able to enjoy some of the red skyline. Of course you can decide to eat Mexican when you finish. First person back get the table for us. Don't forget, we start at the Long Beach Harbor.

Yes, we'll be running tomorrow. Might delay start until 6:15 but recommend being ready by 6:00 if you're able. We're still parking at Juan Tequila's and walking across 90 to the harbor together. We'll be discussing a change in venue tomorrow night. That is possibly changing our start to Harbor View and hanging out there for a bite to eat afterwards. Margarita's and mexican food are good but the karaoke and loud music is a challenge sometimes.

About the double jogging stroller. There are some parts of the boardwalk that might be a close challenge. If you're not bringing it tomorrow you'll have a chance to see.

Is there any talk of starting back up with this weekly run?
